The conversations have been going well. You open the app regularly and speak without the panic you used to feel. You are more comfortable than you were.

Look back at what you said, though, and a pattern may show up. The same tenses. The same reliable phrases. When the conversation approached a structure you were unsure about, you found another way to say it.

That is not a flaw in the app. It is what open conversation is: you pick the words, and you pick the ones you already have.

What Praktika is built to do

Praktika is a spoken-practice app organized around persistent AI avatar tutors with names, backstories and accents. You speak or type with them, either along a guided lesson path or in free conversation, and corrections arrive in the flow of the exchange. Its own framing promises gentle, real-time corrections on pronunciation, grammar and word choice.

Several independent reviews credit the avatar format with making conversation feel lower-pressure, and one tester described feeling for the first time like they were having a real exchange. Sessions can be short, and the scenario library is large, with around 140 conversation topics in the practice tab alongside a structured path. One subscription includes every language Praktika teaches.

Praktika also lets you choose soft, balanced or strict feedback. Corrections are delivered by restating your sentence rather than interrupting the exchange.

Where the reviews agree it thins out

The reviews repeatedly point to the same limit: feedback is present, but its depth and visibility vary.

Corrections sit behind a feedback button next to each of your turns. There is no end-of-lesson summary, so it is entirely possible to finish a session without noticing what was wrong. A second review describes errors as flagged more than explained, with brief notes that often skip why the mistake happened. A third found pronunciation scoring accurate for clear speech but that it misses subtle grammar errors. The most favorable review, scoring it 4.6 out of 5, still lists limited grammar instruction depth among its weaknesses.

Put together, Praktika corrects in the moment. The reviewed versions did not show learners a cumulative model of recurring errors or consistently attach the underlying rule to each fix.

Two practical constraints round it out. Praktika’s own help center states there is no desktop version, and the App Store listing is iPhone only. It teaches 12 languages, and Hebrew is not among them.

What Dioma is built to do

Dioma assumes you can already produce sentences and focuses on which structures the task requires. Sessions are drawn from where you sit on a level map rather than from whatever came up in conversation. You produce the language first, and the correction connects your error to the curriculum rule behind it rather than only restating the sentence.

The curriculum contains about 750 topic files, with Spanish running from lower intermediate through advanced and French and Hebrew currently reaching upper intermediate. Educators write the rules; the system uses them in its feedback.

The design choice that matters here is that Dioma can assign structures you would not choose in open conversation. Free conversation is useful for fluency, but the learner still has room to stay inside familiar language.

Both products constrain you. They just constrain toward different things: reviewers note that Praktika’s scripted paths pull you back on topic, while Dioma’s curriculum stretches you beyond overly common scenarios.

How to tell which one fits you

The useful question is not which app is better built. Both are competent at what they are for.

Praktika fits if speaking is still very uncomfortable. If you rehearse before you talk, avoid conversations with people, or lose your sentence halfway through, then volume of low-stakes practice is the thing that helps, and an avatar that never sighs is a good way to get it. It is also the answer if you want Japanese or Korean, which Dioma does not teach.

Dioma fits if talking is no longer the hard part and accuracy is. Look at your last few conversations and ask which grammar you did not use. If the list includes the subjunctive, past tenses you mix up and constructions you routinely paraphrase around, open conversation may not reach them reliably. Avoidance works too well to expose every gap on its own.

How Praktika and Dioma can fit together

These two need not duplicate each other. A learner who is comfortable but inaccurate, or accurate but halting, may have a use for both: conversation practice supplies more speaking time, while a curriculum supplies tasks the learner would not have set alone.

Dioma is built for the accuracy half: production tasks pulled from a leveled curriculum, corrections that name the rule, and a record of the errors that keep returning so the next session targets them. Its own use of AI is narrower than an avatar model suggests: educators write the rules, the model delivers them. It sits alongside your speaking practice rather than replacing it, and if your bottleneck really is getting words out at all, it is the wrong tool for now.
