Corrections got a lot better, and our Spanish community is open

We’ve made a big improvement to Dioma’s correction engine, and we’re opening something new to anyone learning Spanish independently.

The corrections got a lot better.

Here’s the honest version of what was wrong. The feedback engine sometimes told you that you’d made a mistake when you hadn’t. It was worst in Hebrew, but present in all of our languages. A couple of learners wrote to tell me exactly that, and they were right to be frustrated. Being corrected on something you got right is worse than getting no feedback at all, because you start doubting what you actually know.

So we rebuilt it: a new model behind the corrections, rewritten instructions, and a different way of judging the quality of a response. We tested it over the last few days and are seeing a huge improvement.

What you should notice

Far fewer corrections you didn’t need. This was the big one.

It no longer invents a problem to fill space. This is why corrections could previously feel overly nitpicky, or simply wrong.

Corrections arrive more quickly. You spend less time waiting and can act on the feedback while your response is still fresh.

There’s still plenty on our list to improve correction quality further, but this was too big a jump not to share.

We started a Spanish community, and it’s open to everyone.

It’s a Facebook group for independent Spanish learners at the intermediate and advanced level. A native speaker is helping run it, and we’re adding teacher contributors over the coming weeks. The focus is education, not promotion.
